A look at the most popular online games of 2020 makes it clear that shooters have a clear lead overall. Several of them land in the first place, but other genres are already on their heels. It has already been sold more than 200 million times over the virtual counter, in between there was a brief lull until sales figures rose sharply again from 2018/19. This was due to the streamers on Youtube and Twitch, who systematically hyped the world of dice game with their videos. The champion of the MMORPG games: World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft is a true classic of the digital game world - and at the same time its everlasting champion. The evergreen was launched in 2004 and business has been booming ever since. Although the number of players is gradually falling due to the tough competition that arises, WoW continues to appear regularly on the hit lists of the world's favorite games. After Blizzard Entertainment re-released the very first version of their successful pupil, many nostalgic people were drawn back into the action. The newest edition, Shadowslands, sold 3.7 million copies within the first day. For comparison: Burning Crusade "only" managed to sell 3.5 million copies in the month of publication in 2007, which is also very impressive.

Few other games can be mentioned in the same breath as Wow, League of Legends is definitely one of them. LoL from Riot Games dates back to 2009, so it is already celebrating its 12th birthday this year. In 2016, the producer announced that its multi-player online battle would be played by around 100 million users per month. In October 2012 there were "only" 70 million accounts, the number has grown steadily since then. League of Legends is currently one of the most popular e-sports disciplines, and the prizes for the tournaments in question are skyrocketing. More and more young people have only one career aspiration: to become a LoL professional, a modern-day athlete who earns himself with the greatest concentration on the display.

Mobile games on the rise: from Fortnite to Pokemon

Mobile gaming is the strongest trend now and in the future. There is a separate app for almost every game, which also conjures up fun and excitement on the smartphone. The current audience favorites include not only battle royale epics like Player Unknown Battlegrounds and Fortnite, but also many different strategy and action games as well as challenging digital puzzles. Pokémon Go has certainly earned its own laurels here, as well as the colorful candy hit Candy Crush and the pig spectacle from Angry Birds.

Here it becomes clear that not only digital fighters and warriors get their money's worth, but also puzzle lovers, adventure fans and everyone who likes things funny and trashy. The real fascination of online games clearly lies in their motley variety.
